Up until recently, the best options available for fighting breast cancer were the physician exam, the monthly self exam and the mammogram. Unfortunately, breast cancer remains the leading cause of death in women ages 35 to 50. Although the marketing of breast cancer awareness and the pink ribbon have done much for bringing this war against breast cancer to the forefront, we are still losing the battle.

It was once thought that this disease mostly struck women who had a history of breast cancer in their family. This is no longer the case. Today, 8 out of 9breast cancer patients do not have a relative with the disease. It no longer can be called an “older woman’s” disease since there are 250,000 women under 40 years of age who have breast cancer. This is not a disease that you can ignore until there is an identifiable risk factor because 70% of women who develop breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors. But there is some good news and it is not just on the horizon....no, it is right here in Bullhead City.

Dr. Goldstein-Charbonneau and Dr. Borchers at All Women’s Medical Center have renewed hope that these depressing statistics will change and that they will change soon! The numbers are not just statistics to these two doctors. They know and deal with the women who become those numbers on a daily basis. In addition, they have also experienced the devastation of losing a loved one to cancer. In fact, it was cancer that inspired Dr. Goldstein- Charbonneau to become a physician. You see, she lost her mother to this awful disease.

So why do these two physicians, along with hundreds of other physicians nationally, now have hope that they will see a reduction in breast cancer in their lifetime? The answer involves a new FDA approved procedure called the HALO Breast Pap Test. This procedure takes 5 minutes, is non-invasive and can detect abnormal cells BEFORE they even become cancerous! Early detection is critical in the fight against breast cancer and up until now the early detection consisted of feeling a lump or seeing a lump in a mammogram when it is still small. The problem is that cancer grows an average of 8 years before it reaches the point it can be detected on a mammogram. So in essence, the early detection is really several years late making it all the harder for physicians to successfully treat.

The HALO Breast Pap Test can identify the atypical cells before they turn cancerous and start growing. You cannot get much earlier detection than that! Plus, there are no age restrictions so women who are too young for a mammogram now have an alternative for early detection. The HALO Breast Pap Test is not meant to replace the mammogram, it is just another tool to help in the fight against the disease. All women should have an annual HALO Breast Pap Test.

You can call All Women’s Medical Center at 2500 Canyon Rd.
