Charter schools have recently emerged as popular and effective alternatives to traditional public schools. Less than two decades since charter schools first came on the scene, the nation has 4,578 charter schools dispersed across forty-one states. A study by Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (2009), revealed that students benefit academically when their public school is exposed to competition from a charter.

Mohave Accelerated Learning Center was founded in 2001 and was a “heart decision” to ensure students have choices for their education. Not all students have traditional lives, some want to graduate earlier and participate in the dual enrollment with Mohave Community College. Some have fallen behind and participate in our Credit Recovery Program to catch up on classes they may have failed or missed in their high school journey, or some may prefer a small school atmosphere. What ever the reason a student and family decides to be a part of this educational institution they find they come to a caring, professional, and family environment. The following information may be helpful to better understand Mohave Accelerated Learning Center charter schools.

Misconceptions with charter schools:

Q:
Is there a cost for these schools?
A: Mohave Accelerated Learning Schools are “free” public schools, they are however, first come--first served.

Q:
Charter schools are not required to hire highly qualified teachers.
A: When a school receives Federal funds, they are required to have highly qualified teachers. Therefore, we receive federal funds and the schools hire only highly qualified professional teachers.

Q:
Students that graduate from a charter school are not able to go into the military or some universities.
A: All Mohave Accelerated Schools are accredited through North Central Accreditation. This ensures the students are treated fairly.

Q:
There are more discipline problems at charter schools.
A: Students that do not come to learn often find themselves in front of the school board for poor attendance, failing scores, or behavioral problems.

Q:
Class sizes are not controlled.
A: We have limits on the various grade levels to ensure one-on-one teaching for students.

Mrs. Merrigan, counselor for Mohave Accelerated Learning Center (MALC), says we are meeting the needs of students by not only offering the core courses but additional electives in the following areas: Sports Medicine; Restaurant Management; Health Nutrition; Career Exploration; Medical Terminology; Guitar; Physical Education/Health; Art & Drawing; Forensic Science; Spanish I & II; Sociology; Psychology; Life Skills; Technology; Yearbook; Photography; Cheerleading and TV Production/Advanced (Animation, Editing).

The Sports Program offers: Football; Intramural Tackle Football for Junior High (New this year); Basketball (boys, girls, high school & Jr. High); Volleyball; Baseball; Softball; Soccer; Cross Country.

Campus Clubs: Key Club; Japanese Club; Paintball Club; Swim Club; After school Yoga/Fitness Ball. The after-school program is available for K-12th students and provides “free” tutoring, monthly field trips, and enrichment activities.
